With some of the wettest weather on record, the start to the Summer term has been somewhat ‘challenging’.
I would like to publicly thank the efforts of the ground staff who have been (and continue to) work both day and night to ensure our matches have the best possible chance of going ahead.
Despite the terribly wet weather, they did an amazing job in preparing the athletics track for the Senior Sports Day, and First Year and Second Year inter-form track event this week. Both events were fantastic, and it was great to see so many students competing for their House and for their Forms.
The Senior Sports Day is always a highlight of the school calendar, and this year didn’t disappoint. There were some fantastic races and field events, supported by a rather loud and excited crowd from Fifth Year to Upper Sixth.
Face paint, chanting, and the waving of House colours were non-stop all afternoon - which certainly helped our athletes achieve their best. A huge congratulations to both Alex Hartemink and Ben Lavendar who were awarded with the Victrix and Victor Ludorum respectively, which highlighted them as the outstanding athletes of the day.
Following Sports Day, it was the turn of First and Second Years who competed in the inter-form track event that same evening - with over 200 competitors across both year groups run for glory. There were some outstanding individual efforts that, in turn, leaves the department feeling excited about the upcoming athletic meets.
Cricket practices continue to run in the background as to ensure that once the season formally starts, we are good to go, and tennis practices have been nothing short of outstanding.
We have had record numbers attending with over 35+ students per year group practising their skills with the view of being the next Federer or Williams sister.
Last Saturday, our girls football teams opened their season against local rivals Cheadle Hulme and, despite some strong performances, the opposition were just a little too strong. The girls football practices continue to run weekly as we begin to prepare them for their next set of games. Our first tennis fixtures of the week commence on Saturday (after an internal tournament last week) and we also have a couple of cricket fixtures being played too.
Hopefully this means we are moving in the right direction with more games hopefully being played in the coming weeks.
