The Spring term offered pupils a number of exceptional sporting opportunities to challenge their physical abilities and develop their love of a sport.

SGS aims to provide as many pupils as possible with the opportunity to represent the school. Here is snippet of some of the action.

Netball County Champions

The Under 16 netball team headed to East Manchester to take on schools from across the county at a competition at Wright Robinson College.

A depleted squad of seven faced a tough challenge as they competed against schools including The Blue Coat School, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls and Bolton School.

With many of the girls playing in new combinations and some out of position, the sports stars gave their all and showed great determination as they secured seven wins and one draw. This meant that they were crowned as County champions!

Head of Netball Development Miss Paige Kindred said: “We are so proud of the whole squad and all those that have represented Stockport Grammar School Under 16s to date. They have been such a talented and hard-working group.”

Impressive Cup Run

The 1st XV rugby team embarked on an inspiring cup run as they made it all the way to the semi-final of the Under 18 National Schools Plate Competition.

After entering the competition following a narrow loss in the National Schools Cup to Altrincham Grammar School for Boys in the Cup, the players showed excellent determination and teamwork to secure a number of wonderful victories.

The King’s School, Macclesfield were dispatched by a score line of 19-13 and they saw off Merchant Taylors’ School 24-8 in the following round. They overcame Stonyhurst College on tries scored following a 29-29 draw and defeated Norwich School 51-19 in the quarter-final in front of a bumper home crowd.

Their search for silverware came to an end in the semi-final as Stowe School secured an impressive win.

8-a-side Football Competition

Three teams proved their burgeoning skills during a football competition at Manchester Grammar School.

During the 8-a-side competition, the Under 15 and 2nd XI sides reached the semi-finals and the Under 12 team made it through to the final.

Head of Sport, Mr Danny Thomson said: “It was great to see the boys compete against the best in the North West. They played some great football with smiles on their faces.”

Be The Best You Can Be Programme

DRN Nutrition’s Dan Richardson and footballer Mark Roberts delivered inspiring sessions to students as part of the Sport, PE, Health and Fitness department’s “Be the best you can be” programme.

Dan, who has worked with professional athletes across a variety of sports, focused on nutrition whilst Mark talked about preparation, practice and performance and having the right mindset.

Dan held an online session for parents at the end of April and Mark holds his on 13th June.

The department is pleased to welcome Izzy Fry and Ben Bush for the Summer term.
