Match Report
Stockport Grammar School 1st XI vs  Crompton House C of E School
On: Wednesday, 04 Mar 2020
Venue: at Home

Our long awaited return to the mighty home pitch welcomed Crompton House School as our opponents for the day. A difficult first half saw an even game with the battle mainly in the midfield. With the ref blowing up for offside on about 5 of our players in the first 20 minutes, we struggled to break through their final defensive line, a problem Crompton had too. That was, until, an overload of opposition players on our right hand side engineered a switch pass to their winger, who finished at the second time of asking. 1-0 Crompton. We went into the half time break optimistic thanks to a couple more chances from corners. Sam Shilton's header cleared off the line and from the resulting corner another opportunity fell to the same man, this time at his feet. His powerful left footed volley striking a defender in his unfortunate area, the unlucky man had to be substituted for his troubles.

In the second half it was clear who was going to win the game, Stockport. Maybe thanks to the hard work and graft put in by all or, as pointed out after the game, the tactical switch to a 3 man midfield that enabled us to overpower the opposition. Our first goal came from a corner. Flaherty whipped a venomous away swinger that smacked the crossbar then strangely their defender just headed it into his own net, 1-1. More dominance from our front men won another corner for us. Flaherty delivered a deep corner straight into the top corner, an outrageous goal to give us the lead. Another break through their back line from a goal kick and Walmisley passed to Pichel who's amazing finish from a yard out gave us a two goal lead. 3-1. Our final goal to top off a great afternoon came from a Bowden penalty won by Barnett, sending the keeper the wrong way. 4-1. Man of the match was Harry Flaherty for his goal and assist from right back, special mention to Sameer Javid for some excellent skill runs helping to start attacks.
