Match Report
Stockport Grammar School 1st XI vs  The King's School, Chester
On: Saturday, 25 Jan 2020
Venue: Away

The 1st team lost to King’s Chester 2-0 despite an excellent performance from all. The game began with a flurry of King’s Chester attacks that ultimately achieved nothing thanks to some good defending from everybody, and following this, we began to grow into the game quickly. Dan Stevenson broke through their defensive line and volleyed the ball sweetly into the back of King’s Chester net only to see the flag up for offside against him- a close call. Suddenly the game was alive, end to end stuff for much of the remaining half until one of their excellent front three shot from 30 yards out, on the turn, right into the top corner to give his team the lead. This seemed to have us rattled as no sooner than a couple minutes later King’s Chester doubled their advantage with some clever movement leading to a back post volley from a corner that shot into the net. We were able to regain our composure and finished the half as we had been for much of the game. A rallying team talk at half time led to a much more dominant display as our silky football combined with the smooth surface that meant we could create lots of half chances that, unfortunately, rewarded us with nothing more than the odd shot on target that their decent keeper dealt with easily. The clock wound down and despite our constant pressure, we still just couldn’t score. The result may have been a 2-0 loss, but we were excellent throughout and all can be proud of how we played. Man of the match was Harry Flaherty who was exceptional wherever he played.
